Handwoven by Kjerstin is a weaving studio in Kalamunda, where stallholder Kjerstin Bjelland creates handwoven scarves, blankets, table runners and more by hand on her weaving looms.
We’ve chosen her as a featured stallholder because she’s a favourite with market visitors.
My studio started out with just a small part of our shed, but with each new loom it has grown.
It now houses three floor looms, all the equipment needed for weaving, lots of books and magazines and of course a great, big collection of yarns.
All my yarns are made from natural fibres, sourced from both Australia and overseas.
I get my inspiration from the colours and textures of my yarns, as well as patterns in books and magazines.
To weave, I think you have to learn to enjoy every part of the process. The photo’s show some of the steps involved.
1. The yarn is selected
2. Every thread needs to be the same length and in the correct order, this is done on a warping mill
3. The threads are spread out to the correct width before they are wound onto the warping beam on the back of the loom
4. The yarn ends are threaded in accordance with the pattern chosen
5. The yarn ends are threaded to the correct width and density
6. The weaving can begin
7. The fringes are made
Visitors who comes into my stall likes all the different colours, textures and patterns of my wares, and the fact that I make everything myself.
I choose the Kalamunda Artisan Market because of the quality of all the stalls.
I really enjoy for people to come into my stall for a browse of my work and spinning wheel, and of course even more so if they decide to make a purchase.
